Mount Mulanje offers a wide variety of possible trails and tours. On top of the mountain the Mulanje Mountain Hikers Association maintains a several huts and shelters, providing accommodations for trekkers who wish to tour the mountain for more than one day. There are several huts on top of the mountain which are equipped with basic amenities which are provided by caretakers.

Please note that there is no running water, electricity or food provided on top of the mountain. Supplies such as sleeping bags and food can be arranged beforehand for a small fee. Also, most huts are communally used by other hikers and mountain climbers. Private accommodations are not possible unless you bring your own camping supplies.

Below you will find a list of possible trails, their duration and prices. All time durations below are one way, include breaks but are only estimations, no guarantees can be given on how long a trip might actually take.   4. Mountain climbing (NOTE: sheer cliffs and gaps without man-made structures, a fall could be fatal)

Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in South-Central-Africa, with its highest peak, Sapitwa, having a height of 3002 meters above sea level. Besides Sapitwa, Mount Mulanje has more than 15 different peaks between the ranges of 2500-3000 meters, which are all climbable. Please note that all climbs to any of the peaks have a difficulty level of 4 and require an overnight stay on top of the mountain. Furthermore, due to the difficulty and dangers associated with the peak climbs, strict adherence to the rules and instructions of the guides is required. SKYLINE/CHAPALUKA PATH

(Not possible during rainy season)
Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 4-7 hours (depending on location of overnight stay)
o Description: The most walked path of Mount Mulanje, often used by locals to carry goods. It sets itself apart with a beautiful view of the Mulanje plains, combined with traversing waterfalls with water pools which are swimmable.

MILKLINE PATH

(Not possible during rainy seasons)
Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 4 hours
o Description: A nice route with good views of the area and traverses multiple small streams. This route passes through some beautiful nature areas.

Up the Mountain

SOMBANI PATH

Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 4 hours
o Description: The Sombani path is a little withered path to the Sombani Hut and is generally well shaded with nice views over the surrounding flatlands.

MINUNU PATH

Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 6 hours
o Description: Minunu path is densely shaded with mountain rainforest vegetation due to it being on the wet side of the mountain. There is only one stream that can become unpassable during rainy seasons but this is rarely the case.

ELEPHANT HEAD PATH

Difficulty: 2-3
o Duration: 2-3 hours
o Description: The Elephant Head Path is a fairly shaded route that has some parts which are fairly steep. It is fairly shaded and goes up to Thuchira Hut.

MADZEKA PATH

Difficulty: 3
o Duration: 5-6 hours
o Description: Beautiful route with some challenging climbs and steep cliffs. It overlooks the tea plantations on the south-east of the mountain with a few man-made structures to assist at certain parts.

BOMA PATH

Difficulty: 3
o Duration: 2-3 hours
o Description: Shortest route up Mount Mulanje that provides very beautiful panoramic views of the tea estates below. However, contains steep climbs with occasional cliffs.

MNESA PATH

Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 4-5 hours
o Description: Passes a beautiful stretch of rainforest on the mountain plateau and goes up to Lichenya-hut, famed for its beauty and sights. Despite a relatively easy path, going to the starting point is somewhat difficult.

LUKULEZI PATH

Difficulty: 2
o Duration: 5 hours
o Description: A path that starts gently but then slowly gets steeper, reaches up to the Thuchira Hut and is passable year-round.

Other Tours

LIKHUBULA WATERFALLS

Difficulty: 1
o Duration: 2-3 hours
o Description: This route takes you to beautiful waterfalls coming down Mount Mulanje which flow into a deep-water pool (30 meters) which is swimmable. This is a one-day tour and has some gentle slopes with multiple streams and waterfalls along the way.

VILLAGE TOUR

Difficulty: 1
o Duration: 2 hours
o Description: Take an authentic tour through one of the Malawian villages led by a local guide who knows the customs. For the exact contents of this tour, please do not hesitate to contact us.
